TWGHs E-Co Village Signage System Design home
E-Co Village is an open-air campsite built on a landfill area, which is rich in various chemicals generated by the accumulation of different types of waste. Before constructing the foundation, all gases produced by chemical reactions were sealed off and isolated. The structural reinforcement of all buildings on the campsite cannot extend more than 50 cm below the surface to avoid damaging the protective mechanisms that contain the gases and prevent their release.
One of the biggest challenges we faced when designing the outdoor signage was creating a foundation that could withstand wind speeds exceeding level 8 (the campsite is located on an exposed hillside) while keeping the foundation structure depth within 50 cm.
One of our ideas was to use it as the foundation for the outdoor signs. Gabions are a construction method involving three-dimensional mesh cages, barrels, or baskets filled with pebbles, cement, or soil to build roads, retaining walls, and embankments. Since the main structure of gabions is filled with stones of various shapes and sizes and is not completely sealed, it effectively allows strong winds to pass while having enough weight to resist being toppled.
Considering the average height, line of sight, and safety height that gabions can achieve and the weight constraints of the entire landfill area, we designed several gabions of different shapes, heights, and densities. The signage material used treated rusted metal plates, with text and relevant symbols sprayed using natural outdoor, environmentally friendly paint.
